(Religious Tourism in the Village of Litmanová)

Abstract: In the broader context of Christian pilgrimage, religious tourism represents a special form of movement in sacred space. The essence of this is not only a physical journey to a specific place, but also a spiritual journey for individuals and communities. Within the European cultural and religious landscape, Marian devotion has played a significant role in shaping pilgrimage traditions and the spiritual identity of places that have become centres of long-standing religious practice. In the Slovak Republic, the year 1989 saw the renewal and revitalisation of religious tourism in the form of pilgrimage, related to the re-establishment of religious freedoms and a return to traditional expressions of popular piety. This paper aims to analyse the historical development and current potential of the Marian pilgrimage site in Litmanová, one of the youngest centres of Marian devotion in Slovakia. The area‘s potential is assessed through a comparative analysis of selected relevant documents using statistical and graphical methods, taking into account both objective and subjective perspectives. Sources of information also included field research combined with perception research based on questionnaires. The results of this study assess the importance of Marian pilgrimage in preserving spiritual heritage and religious memory in Litmanová, while identifying opportunities for further developing religious tourism in a way that respects the site‘s sacred nature and the authenticity of Marian devotion.
